Electric paint pumps help Montana reduce energy consumption

Many companies are not aware of the great potential that lies in switching from air-driven paint pumps to pumps powered by electricity. At the furniture manufacturer Montana, the transition to electrically powered pumps has ensured a power consumption saving of over 50 percent.

KING

As one of Denmark's leading manufacturers of modern shelving systems and office environments for the home, the furniture manufacturer Montana is very aware of its environmental and climate responsibility. Among other things, the family-owned company already introduced green accounting in 1996, just as since 2007 it has exclusively used water-based varnishes, which do not contain solvents harmful to health and the environment. The sustainable approach is also reflected in production, where Mouritsen A/S has been responsible for replacing 10 air-driven paint pumps in Montana's painting kitchen with a corresponding number of electric Graco paint pumps from Mouritsen A/S. "With the upgrade to electrically powered paint pumps, Montana gets exactly the same functions and features as before - just much cheaper, because there are such large savings on both power consumption and operation due to less need for service," says Steen Rasmussen, Senior Sales Manager at Mouritsen A/S. In addition, the upgrade results in a significant reduction in the noise level from 95 to 77 decibels.

Good business case

The painting kitchen is located at Montana's factory in Haarby on Funen, where it handles the painting of a number of Montana's products.

As part of the project, Mouritsen's specialists mapped the power and operating consumption of the air-based paint pumps and held this figure up against the corresponding consumptions of the electrically powered pumps to illustrate the saving potential on electricity and thus ultimately CO2.

"It showed a payback period of approximately 4.4 years, so it was a really good business case for Montana," says Steen Rasmussen.

The power consumption as an eye-opener

According to Steen Rasmussen, the Montana case serves as an underlining that for many companies there is a large saving associated with switching from air to electricity. Among other things, because an electrically driven paint pump's power consumption is typically more than 57 percent lower than the corresponding ditto for an air-based pump.

"Many people are not at all aware that the savings by switching from air to electricity can be so significant. If we go back a few years, there was a tendency to primarily look at the initial investment, and here it is clear that an air-driven pump has a lower unit price than a pump driven by electricity," explains Steen Rasmussen and elaborates:

"But when you look at the total cost of ownership and including parameters such as ongoing power consumption and maintenance, there are many who close their eyes. Because there really is something to be gained.”
